A rare opportunity to take time for yourself

As a mum of two in full time work grabbing a bit of ‘me’ time is virtually impossible, so imagine my delight when I was able to combine one of these roles with some proper pampering (and no my seven year old did not offer to ‘do’ my hair!) Yesterday I spent a wonderful couple of hours at
Saks at David Lloyd in total relaxation and believe it or not, it was all in a days work! It’s a tough job being an editor.

I was greeted by the lovely Becci, my fi rst therapist. The theme of my visit was detoxifi cation, and boy could I do with some. Becci started by getting me to fi ll in a life style questionnaire and to ask me what I wanted out of my treatment. Becci stressed that the full benefi ts would be reaped after a course of 2 a week for one month and then every 21 days as maintenance but said that I should see
some improvement in my skin tone immediately.

My Aroma Spa Ocean Float/Wrap began with a foot massage and body brushing to exfoliate and
stimulate the skin. Becci then applied a blend of pine and rosemary essential oils to ease aches and pains and fatigue – it smelled divine! Although I was essentially in the buff with just a pair of paper knickers on, Becci was strategic with her positioning of towels so I never felt over exposed!

Next she covered me with a warm antioxidant seaweed de-tox body mask which looked and smelled bit like pureed spinach. Then I was cocooned in foil wrap like something out of a Jamie Oliver recipe, and whilst I ‘cooked’ Becci gave me a wonderful deep Thai drainage facial massage and a de-stress
scalp treatment.

Whilst the tinkling music played, and in the dimmed light, I reached a state of relaxation usually the
reserve of the beach. Over and over in my head I heard the mantra ‘I must do this more often.’

After showering off the wrap (which will continue to do its job all day) Becci smothered my skin in a blend of juniper and lemon essential oils which work on cellulite and fluid retention. After all this, it was on somewhat unsteady legs that I made my way to my next treatment.

Holly was waiting for me in the reception area by a rather medical looking machine. It transpires that it is now possible to scan my skin to asses its condition.

Holly showed my some scans of manager Claire’s skin pre and post a course of treatments and explained the visuals. The improvement was amazing (I actually bumped into Claire on my way out and she did look impossibly radiant).

And yes I still have some sun damage but I must say it didn’t look too bad. Holly was to give me an Anti-aging Correct Facial from CosMedix that would rejuvenate my skin. She started with an exfoliation therapy to remove my photodamaged skin cells and infuse my skin with those
all important antioxidants.

The treatment helps to replace damaged lipids using a blend of hydrating ingredients similar to the skin’s own sebum. Afterwards she treated me to a make over using the natural Young Blood range of
cosmetics and I wondered if the children would recognise me when I turned up at school to pick them up!

My final appointment was with Louise in the hair salon. I was to have the Biotic treatment from the Ritual Collection from Kèrastase Paris. She explained that this would rebalance my scalp and reactivate its natural defences and leave my hair softer and healthier looking. The product was applied to my freshly washed scalp and then rinsed out. My hair was then deep conditioned and expertly blow dried giving my lanky locks more volume than I thought possible! It was a shame I had
nowhere to go.

My hair felt fantastic and still looked great when I got up this morning. All the staff at Saks are
unbelievably friendly and very knowledgeable in their individual spheres; it was a real pleasure to spend some time there. There are a range of products available to buy and these would make
great gifts.

Later at the school gate my daughter said ‘you look hot mummy’ and although I took this as a compliment, I’m sure she was referring to the effect my blusher had on my face (I don’t normally wear
it) rather than any radical transformation in the looks department. I didn’t care. I had snatched a morning just for me and my family had better watch out, I intend to repeat the experience very soon.
